The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Some examples of serial shows are Breaking Bad, Lost, Mad Men, and so forth. This is part of (in my opinion) what makes coming up with a strong pilot so difficult. SerialĪ serial TV show is much like a novel series or movie series in that the major plot and conflict span the entire duration of the show. Below the four types are listed with examples to help you decide which TV show you are writing. As of now, there are four main types of television shows, each one offering something different. Determine whether your TV pilot idea is either a serial/episodic or an anthology/limited seriesīefore you even begin to start outlining your TV show, you need to understand what type of TV show you are writing in the first place. It's worth noting that almost all of this knowledge in terms of what makes a strong pilot (for a serial show) come from the short and well-written book, Writing the Pilot by William Rabkin, which I highly recommend should you wish to write for TV, and my knowledge of television structure comes from my pilot writing professor in undergrad, Beau Thorne. (Note: this post contains affiliate links. So with that in mind, read on to see how to get started writing your first pilot. When you write a pilot you can submit it to competitions and networks without working tirelessly over an entire series and further demonstrate your ability to tell a story, albeit a slightly different one. While there's no "right answer" here, there certainly is a solid starting point - writing a pilot. ![]() Do you write a Bible for your show first? Do you map out the entire series? Or do you just write the entire thing like that True Detective guy did? ![]() In fact, screenwriting classes only recently began to offer television writing as a course, yet with the growing market it's become an essential skill as a screenwriter to have a TV pilot in your arsenal.īecause of that, it's hard to know where to start. However, despite this big moment, TV writing can be incredibly baffling to some, especially given that most shows are written by not just one person but a huge team of people. 6/27/2023 0 Comments A quiet place part 2![]() As they begin to look for a new refuge, they soon find out.Ī Quiet Place was, according to Krasinski, about parenthood. For another, the Abbotts have largely survived in seclusion, and don’t know what the world looks like now that society has collapsed. Babies aren’t known for being quiet or understanding threats, and this one endangers the whole family. Figuring out the trick to fighting them gives the Abbotts a chance at survival as they’re forced to find a new home, but it’s far from enough to make them feel safe.įor one thing, they now have a baby to look after, one born during the first film’s incredibly stressful climax. The sequence - set in the Abbotts’ small upstate New York town in the final moments before the world goes to hell - is a great bit of disaster filmmaking, a terrifying reintroduction to the sightless creatures that brutally hunt down humans by sound while rampaging through small-town America.Īfterward, A Quiet Place Part II picks up immediately after the first movie’s ending, with the Abbott survivors in their wrecked farmhouse, having successfully killed an alien creature for the first time. In addition to giving Part II the opportunity to bring back Lee, who died in A Quiet Place, the prologue also helps introduce viewers who haven’t seen the first movie to the rules of this particular apocalypse, and reminds returning fans who need a refresher. As the family gathers to watch a Little League game, we’re also reminded that the Abbotts are unusually well-equipped to handle what’s coming: Lee is a survivalist type (as noted by the large hunting knife he uses to slice an orange), and the family all speaks ASL to communicate with Regan, who is deaf. Writer-director John Krasinski reintroduces the Abbott family: parents Lee (Krasinski) and Evelyn (Emily Blunt), along with children Marcus (Noah Jupe) and Regan (Millicent Simmonds). Part II begins with an extended prequel set before the first film, depicting the arrival of the deadly, nigh-indestructible aliens that have wiped out much of the population by the time A Quiet Place begins. But just like real families, it’s pretty consistent in both its strengths and its flaws - in other words, it’s the perfect sequel for fans of the original movie, while also being not that bad at welcoming viewers who might have missed the first go-round. The film is a horror story with the heart of a family drama, and for the most part, it works very well. And with there most likely being quite a bit of time before we see A Quiet Place Part III on the list of upcoming horror movies, now’s the perfect time to check out CinemaBlend’s updated 2021 movie premiere date schedule to see what’s coming to theaters (and streaming services) in the meantime.A Quiet Place Part II is kind of like what you’d get if the alien hunter from the Predator franchise stopped by This Is Us for a few episodes. I hope someday to learn enough about bread baking to open a local bakery/cafe, somewhere in Westport or Downtown Kansas City. ![]() Now I can't imagine going back to the way I used to eat. When I set out to learn, I never imagined I'd be making stock, roasting whole chickens, baking bread, or shopping at our local farmer's market. I'm enjoying getting back to eating seasonally, eschewing over - processed prepared food in favor of simpler, healthier, better tasting, cheaper meals I make myself. Use spatula to transfer bread slices to skillet. To make a living, I do process automation for management at an inbound call center. If your French toast has the tendency to burn, try frying the batter-soaked bread in a combination of butter and oil.I'm a programmer by day, bread baker by night. Butter: Like so many of the most decadent foods, the best French toast is made with butter.Salt helps break down the eggs, incorporate them into the batter, and prevents egg chunks in the finished product. A pinch of cinnamon and some vanilla extract are standard upgradesand a little sugar never hurts either. Salt: Don't skip the salt! Just a pinch won't affect the flavor. Season Your French Toast Batter Milk and eggs are the only essentials required for the custard basebut it's how you season the mixture that will give your French toast a distinctive flavor. You could even add a little nutmeg or sugar if you feel like it. The cinnamon and vanilla in this recipe are optional, but we definitely recommend using them for the most delicious experience. I took a quick look at various recipes and found the typical range to be anywhere from two to four eggs per cup of milk. Vanilla and cinnamon: The best French toast is warm, cozy, aromatic, and sweet. You can easily substitute half-and-half, cream, or your favorite alternative milk – full-fat varieties will produce the creamiest consistency. This recipe calls for whole milk because it creates the ideal texture. Not only does milk add the necessary moisture, but the fat gives the batter extra richness. Milk: You can technically use any liquid to make French toast, though milk is most popular. The fat, meanwhile, adds extra creaminess. ![]() The proteins solidify once they're heated, which binds the batter together and ensures a rich texture. Eggs: When it comes to French toast, eggs are essential. ![]() ![]() Sturdy, dense, slightly stale slices absorb the custard-like egg mixture better than thin, airy ones.
6/26/2023 0 Comments Generated passwords![]() They're well published, since high quality pseudo-randomness is a valuable thing for everyone. The algorithm is easier to find out than the actual random bytes used to seed the algorithm. Of course, if those two bytes and the algorithm used to generate passwords are known to the attacker the actual password can be derived. In this way a password generator using 2 bytes of entropy from /dev/random (not /dev/urandom) can produce a 40-character password of high apparent randomness. A deterministic machine using a random input can produce output containing zero to the amount of entropy it got as input, but not introduce any new entropy. Not must be.Īs for your second point, about a deterministic machine's inability to produce random output. To whit, good passwords can be completely random. When you have very large length (512 characters!) the password can include significantly less entropy for the same attack resistance. When you can't use length (that 8 character limit again) you're stuck with high entropy. Therefore a good password has high entropy AND length. ![]() (I had a blog post about this a while back that goes into more detail about this issue in the context of cross-platform password policies. The second would be an insane password for Solaris since it would be truncated after the 8th character, where the first would be lamentable on Windows if that password hash ever got discovered (sniffed in flight, sucked down from a domain controller, that kind of thing) thanks to Rainbow Tables. The second has laughable entropy out to 16 characters, but passable entropy after that. The first has very high entropy out to eight characters. It has also divided what counts as a good password.Ī good password on Windows: 0123456789abcefBubba2pAantz The (welcome) death of the 8-character limit on passwords has opened up a whole new universe of good password possibilities.

For instance, your can start to type a name and number and the app will suggest “call Funke”. You can also work seamlessly with new and existing entries. When you have duplicate contacts, the app help merge them with just a single tap. You can even share the group contacts to your family, friends and colleagues. The app features contact groups which you can create and you can send group texts and emails from the app. It has a powerful search feature that helps you to find contacts more easily. Grab Cardhop for just $4 on the iOS App Store. Ryan Christoffel’s review for MacStories is also an excellent overview. To understand the power of Cardhop for iOS, I recommend watching the series of tutorial videos they got David Sparks to narrate. It’s all seamless and works exactly the way you want it to. You don’t even have to physically type anything out - just activate the mic button on the bar to have it transcribe what you say. Or, when someone gives you their new number, you can type it into the bar followed by their name, and Cardhop will let you update their contact info. ![]() So for example, you can type “dial Chelsea” and tap the appropriate result from the search results to start a phone call. The search bar at the bottom of the app doubles as a universal input method. Like the Mac app and all versions of Fantastical, Cardhop for iOS is powered by a natural-language input system. ![]() To that end, they’ve designed an experience where you don’t just “manage contacts” or “input data” - you interact with important people in your life. □Ĭardhop for iOS follows in the footsteps of Fantastical in that it’s got its sights set on replacing a default Apple app, except for contact management instead of calendaring. Today they ~finally~ launched the iOS companion, which I have to note off the bat kept with the “sandwich” icon theme (once again designed by artist David Lanham). In October 2017, developer Flexibits released Cardhop for Mac, with the intention of being a contacts app you’d actually want to use. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Expense ratio![]() If you’re ready to find an advisor who can help you achieve your financial goals, get started now. SmartAsset’s free tool matches you with up to three financial advisors in your area, and you can interview your advisor matches at no cost to decide which one is right for you. Finding a qualified financial advisor doesn’t have to be hard. A financial advisor can help you craft an investing strategy that suits your needs and manage your assets on a daily basis.According to the Investment Company Institute, the average expense ratio of an actively managed equity mutual fund was 0.71% in 2020, considerably higher than the average for an equity index fund, 0.06%. Index funds and exchange-traded funds, which passively track market indexes, are typically more cost-efficient investments than actively managed mutual funds.By investing in Fund B, a person would pay $8,630 more in annual fees than an investor in Fund A. The seemingly minuscule difference between the expense ratios of Fund A (0.15%) and Fund B (0.75%) adds up to thousands of dollars over the course of 30 years. This simple example shows the outsized impact that expense ratios can have on the growth of an investment over a long period of time. In other words, an investor in Fund B with earn 19% less than an investor in Fund A, paying $8,630 more in annual fees. This means that net earnings are $36,416. ![]() The same $10,000 invested in Fund B will grow to just $46,416 (after fees) with $11,019 going to fees. While Fund B will grow to the same balance before fees ($57,435), the net balance after fees is drastically different. A total of $2,389 in fees will be taken out during that time so that the net earnings on the initial $10,000 investment total $45,046.įund B, on the other hand, will grow more slowly because 0.60% more in fees will be extracted from the account each year. A $10,000 investment in Fund A, whose expense ratio is only 0.15%, will grow to $57,435 (before fees) over the course of 30 years. Here’s a look at the numbers: Lower Expense Ratio Means Larger Profitīoth funds – we’ll refer to them as Fund A and Fund B – will grow by the same 6% each year, but their expense ratios will erode earnings at different rates. While only 0.60% separates the expense ratios of the two funds, the fund with the lower fees will save investors more than $8,000 over a 30-year period. We examined how an initial investment of $10,000 in either fund would grow over 30 years, given the different ratios. To illustrate the impact that expense ratios can have on long-term growth, we compared two hypothetical funds with identical rates of return (6%) but different expense ratios: one fund charges 0.15% in fees, while the other charges 0.75%. If you need help picking cost-efficient investments, a financial advisor can help. But here’s a huge wake-up call: those built-in fees could be costing you thousands of dollars in the long run. The difference between small percentages often appears innocuous, so we too seldom take action to move our money to investments with lower expense ratios. Expressed as a percentage, an expense ratio is the portion of your total account value removed annually in fees. A fund’s expense ratio, the internal operating costs paid by investors, is also an important component to keep in mind. Historical returns and underlying investments aren’t the only metrics to consider when selecting mutual funds. |
